DAYTON — Public school reform will be one of the main topics discussed at the Dayton Unit NAACP monthly meeting tonight, July 26.

The meeting, which is free and open to the public, starts at 6:45 p.m. at Westwood Pre-K-8 Elementary School, 2805 Oakridge Drive.

The guest speaker is Gary Percesepe, executive director of Prepare The Future Ohio, headquartered in Springfield.

“We are an education advocacy organization that is building a grassroots movement of citizens to reform public education in Ohio and to ensure that it’s adequately funded,” Percesepe said. “A quality public education is the right of every child whether they are black, brown or white, rich or poor.”

Percesepe is hoping to use the meeting to garner support for his grassroots movement and to encourage citizens to contact their state legislators about supporting or creating measures that would provide adequate funding and improve student achievement in public schools.

Some of the things that Percesepe said he is advocating for is for the state to provide funding for mandatory early childhood education programs for all public schools and more funding for after-school learning programs provided by the public schools. Things that Percesepe believes will help improve student achievement.

“We are organizing primarily through churches,” said Percesepe, who is also the pastor of Highlands United Church of Christ in Springfield and the Former executive director of Greater Dayton Christian Connections. “We’re gaining a lot of momentum in the faith community.”
