NAACP Endorses Prepare the Future in Dayton, Ohio

On July 26, by unanimous acclaim, the Dayton, Ohio Unit of the NAACP endorsed Prepare the Future Ohio, and pledged to build an Action Tree! Over twenty NAACP members signed up to join Prepare the Future Ohio, with many making donations on the spot.

DAYTON — Public school reform will be one of the main topics discussed at the Dayton Unit NAACP monthly meeting tonight, July 26.

The meeting, which is free and open to the public, starts at 6:45 p.m. at Westwood Pre-K-8 Elementary School, 2805 Oakridge Drive.

Celebrating the Gift of Dorothy Height, RIP

We celebrate the life of Dorothy Height, the "mother" of the Civil Rights
movement.  In Prepare The Future Ohio, we often use the gospel story of the
persistent widow seeking justice from the wicked judge as underlying text for
our efforts. Ms. Height has served as an exemplar of a persistent advocate for
justice for all of God's children, young and old.  While we are saddened by her
passing, we rejoice in her life and example.

Ohio among the ten states with highest taxes on the poor

The Columbus Dispatch reported today that a national report, Who Pays?, issued  by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, said Ohio's tax overhaul approved in 2005, which includes the 2009 tax-rate cut that is currently under debate, increased the disparity between what Ohio's poorest and wealthiest citizens pay in taxes. The poor are paying a higher percentage of their income, the report said, with Ohio ranking 28th in "fairness," compared with 14th in 2002.

Ohio was among 10 states that decreased pre-kindergarten funding for the 2009-10 school year, according to the report, "Votes Count: Legislative Action on Pre-K Fiscal Year 2010," released recently.

A recent report, Taking Human Capital Seriously: Talented Teachers in Every Classroom, Talented Principals in Every School, calls for states and school districts to overhaul how they recruit, prepare, evaluate, and compensate teachers.
